I decided to put together a special compilation of First Rays related Maui live tracks, there have been some edits for continuity or other purposes. For example the Hey Baby intro of the 2nd Set was used to replace the AUD intro for a full SBD experience. Also made some little edits - the bum note early in Hear My Train...such a great performance I cheated a bit for the purposes of the compilation. That is why I am separating from a straight cleanup of Maui - coming soon...

Notes:
The second source of this show only runs to Foxy Lady - is a mic dub, and is only available as a compressed file. Given Frankfurt sounded a bit flat I thought I'd merge what was available - but had some issues - one, the version of the 1st Source I was using was not the same as the Burning in Frankfurt one, and I didn't know where I got it from? It was also fake stereo - so I went back to the old bootleg and cleaned that up and just added some of the merge experiments as a bonus. Voodoo Child came from this mystery tape...as it is not on the boot.
The merges didn't sound quite like I wanted them to anyway. Unlike panning direct L/R which leaves some room to move, mixing the tracks together - to fill the numerous dropouts - means that they have to be dead on, or it sounds pretty crap. Because the 2nd source mic dub had extraneous noise throughout I chopped all of the creaks and cracks and bangs out and then remixed...wasn't perhaps as accurate as I would have liked, so I didn't bother any further...

The Scene club tapes are 1 1/2 steps below standard tuning and like everyone else I have gotten used to the sound of the tape, but it surely can't be running at the correct speed - Jimi often played a whole step down, but not 1 1/2...it seems a bit too much to me and the tape seems to be running slow. I have adjusted the speed/pitch up a semitone to make it a step below standard (rather than 1/2 step as usual of the time...because retuning/speed adjustment of the tape up a whole tone makes it seem to run a bit too fast - so I suspect the shows were at least a step down)...
I have seen the quality of these tapes rated as "good" - but I believe that to be quite generous and I'd say it falls within fair to reasonable range at best.
Still lot of problems with these tapes - including inherent distortion throughout which I have tried to minimise...
