17 - Preshow Chat and Intro [Fourth Source Merge]

Track 17 can be directly substituted for Track 01 if you want to start with the Fourth Source preshow chat.

The 50th Anniversary of Jimi's death was the inspiration to finally finish this new merge project. I had been messing around with it off and on for quite a period of time. I did try a complete four source merge but with its speed issues, it really got in the way, so I decided to scrap it beyond the preshow chat and intro. The only real problem remains that there is not much in the way of drums in the first few tracks, and the fourth source doesn't help with this, another reason not to use it.

I made a number of mixes to get the balance between the sources as best I could, with the intention of near SBD quality. The hardest part was picking which one to finally let out...I just hope this is the best of them!

Latest

So the YouTube channel has been shut down. I don't think I can keep playing that game. Really a pity as there were so many cool Jimi fans there to chat with. Anyway...I have now made this blog public again and I will clean up some of the older stuff. Now that CTT has folded it is getting a bit lonesome.

Experiments and Reconstructions [FD Compilation]

Apologies for not doing anything with the blog for such a long time. Spending a lot of time at FD Reference Library on YT these days. Of course I can't post any of this...so...

Experiments and Reconstructions [FD Compilation]

02 - Power of Soul [1969-12-1819 Baggy's Rehearsals]

06 - Bleeding Heart [1969-02-24 RAH Rehearsals]
07 - Villanova Junction [Demo Merge and Studio]
08 - Hey Gypsy Boy
09 - Crash Landing [Remix with Solo]
10 - Easy Blues
11 - Izabella "Take 1"[Gypsy Sun and Rainbows]
12 - Machine Gun [1969-12-1819 Baggy's Rehearsals]

15 - Jam Back At The House Excerpt [1969-08]
16 - Sweet Angel with Vox [Merge]

18 - Room Full of Mirrors [1969-02-24 RAH Rehearsals]
19 - Getting My Heart Back Together [1969-02-24 RAH Rehearsals]

This series is an attempt to represent the post-1968 material that contended for space in Jimi's ill-fated "First Rays of the New Rising Sun" project. Contention here is obviously hypothetical as it is unlikely that Jimi would have even considered many of these recordings as worthy enough. These are some gems culled into a playlist that broadly reflects the 1969 series of recordings done with Gypsy Sun and Rainbows and the Band of Gypsys. There are attempts to provide full length edits of unreleased work and new perspectives on old work.

1968-09-14 Red House Hollywood Bowl [FD Cleanup and Merge]

Just an exercise in merging the recently released "soundboard" with the audience tape. First file is hard left and right, second is distortion removed from recent release, the last two are different mixes of the two tapes.

16 - Fire [EH Compressed Source]
17 - Red House [EH Compressed Source]
18 - Purple Haze [EH Compressed Source]
19 - Wild Thing [EH Compressed Source]
20 - Red House [Alt Mix from ATM]

Lineage: ATM 169 Way Down In Texas Land Rev A FLAC> Adobe Audition (NR, EQ, Comp, Speed Correction)> FLAC
EH Compressed Sources from Youtube(compressed audio)to FLAC> Adobe Audition (Declicked, NR, EQ, Comp, Speed Correction)>FLAC

Have included the cleanup of EH distributed transfer, as it sounds a bit better than ATM - but as it is compressed, it is just for comparison.

Some of the EH transfers of audience tapes have been better source material than some of the previous transfers - but of course they are only in a compressed form (via YouTube) so I have specially marked them so these won't be passed off as uncompressed. I was wondering whether they should be included at all - but some of them produced better results than what was previously available - compression and all.

Original Notes: This is taken directly from my 2-record boot Lp. This came out in the early 1980s and at the time was the only generally available source for this show. I kept this Lps in good condition, but this is not the definitive transfer, some snaps, crackles and pops along the way. I'm sure there are better, but didn't see it on the tracker...so here ya go! Jimi in Iowa!!!!

FD Notes: Davenport - was taken from the vinyl source (transferred to FLAC) because it actually sounded the best to me...EH also released a decent transfer, and it was interesting to see their take on the speed of AYE? I had previously "speed corrected" it to A Flat, but it sounded slow...as it always seems to be in A including EH transfer, I suspect this was played in regular tuning.

So AYE is stereo (where is that tape?) - and in standard tuning, while the rest of the show is in mono and E flat tuning.

The Intro on the vinyl version of Davenport is slightly truncated, as there is not much missing except audience noise and tuning, I elected to leave it with the shorter intro.

Tax Free (Missing From Tape) - such a pity...
