1968-01-08 - Jimi Hendrix - Stockholm, Sweden [1st show] [FD Cleanup]

01 - Intro
02 - Sgt. Pepper
03 - EXP
04 - Up From The Skies
05 - Spanish Castle Magic
06 - Foxy Lady
07 - Little Wing
08 - Fire
09 - Catfish Blues
10 - The Wind cries Mary
11 - Purple Haze (end cut)

Lineage: ATM 166 > Adobe Audition (EQ, Comp - LOTS of minor edits!) > FLAC

This is a highly problematic tape due to the amount of mic noise, bursts of signal distortion, attenuation and other problems with this historic show.

I have tried cleaning/editing EXP/Up From The Skies before - this is a new attempt. I tried to remove as many mic rumbles and issues as possible without affecting the music.
Despite that - it can still be an annoying listen - Spanish Castle Magic for example is all over the shop. I have included previous notes about this tape below just in case anyone is unaware of its problems.

Now - having tried to tweak the tape to bring out its best, it is a little hissy because of levels on the tape - I applied a little bit of noise reduction but not very much because it sounded more authentic without it. That said the levels on the tape go up and down - just listen to SCM for example. But to EQ the signal of EXP/Up From the Skies meant bringing up the latent hiss in the tape...

There is also some phasing going on as well - apparent in intro and quieter sections of the tape...

My own personal theory with this tape is that the taper was using a dodgy mic to record it - and perhaps the taper was accidently hitting the volume (?) as it recorded hence the massive spikes in gain that occur. Then the sound goes down to nothing. I am not sure whether this was done at the venue or whether this was a mic dub of the original?
For example at one stage the taper is blowing into the mic perhaps to check if it was recording? It didn't affect things so I cut it out.

1968-02-17 Jimi Hendrix - Fort Worth TX [FD Cleanup]

01 - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
02 - Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?
03 - The Wind Cries Mary
04 - Fire
05 - Catfish Blues
06 - Foxy Lady (Speed Issues)

07 - Hey Joe
08 - Purple Haze
09 - Wild Thing

Lineage: ATM 108 > Adobe Audition 3 (NR, EQ, Comp) > FLAC

For a 1968 AUD tape this is pretty good, so I didn't mess with it too much. Removed some of the distortion and extraneous noise...tried not to change the character of the tape. There are some speed problems in Foxy Lady (which also has end cut). While the rest of the tape is not as bad there are some problems with inconsistent tape speed in the last few tracks. Besides the other tweaks, I did have a go at adjusting the speed of Foxy Lady - but it didn't do a lot for it, so in the end I left it.

1969-04-19 Jimi Hendrix - Sam Houston Coliseum [FD Cleanup]

01 - Introduction
02 - Sunshine of Your Love
03 - Voodoo Child

FLAC > Adobe Audition (NR, EQ, Comp, Click Removal) > FLAC

As usual another rough tape of only two songs.
Lots of extraneous noise clicks and pops etc, some drop outs here and there. Cleaned what was possible.
There is a little bass distortion at end of intro and beginning of Sunshine...before taper has reduced volume...overall tape is bass heavy and some distortion here and there.

In terms of lineage there is definitely a transfer from reel to reel to another analogue source as there is a cut at 1:42 in Raw Source of Sunshine of Your Love which matches up with repeat section...so there must have been at least one copy where tape was stopped and section was copied again.

1969-04-04 - "Pop Expo 69" Jimi Hendrix Interview and Delaney and Bonnie Jam

Interview with Jimi by Jay Harvey for KAAI backstage at "Pop-Expo '69" at Hollywood Palladium before jam with Delaney and Bonnie...Hendrix plays Room Full of Mirrors and Shame, Shame, Shame medley.
The original tape has had some minor work done - most prominently erasing the tape stops and starts that make this so annoying to listen to...unfortunately the stops and starts also impede the jam - but I have tried to edit for a more continuous listen. Little bit of cleanup work too.

Here is the FLAC

1969-05-16 Jimi Hendrix Civic Centre, Baltimore [FD Cleanup]

01 Lover Man
02 Hear My Train
03 Fire
04 Red House (end cut)
05 I Don't Live Today (start cut)
06 Foxy lady
07 Purple haze
08 Spanish castle magic
09 Voodoo child (slight return) (drop-out at 4.49, end cut)
10 Fire (RAW for comparison)

Lineage: ATM 125 FLAC > Adobe Audition 3 (NR, EQ, Comp, Click Editing) > FLAC

OK before we begin this tape is considered to be POOR. Was a real challenge to "clean up" - it is still pretty crappy - despite the time spent trying to resurrect it. Listen to the RAW source [included] and you will see what I was up against. Once the noise was cleaned other limitations became apparent - like fluctuating volume levels and strange clicks - so once they were edited I had to compress to even it out as much as possible. I had spent hours manually cutting out clicks, and then decided I wanted to do it again...I cut out the worst ones...a few remain...
Anyway, it is with the very poorest tapes that you learn the most...
Not the best listen in the world, but I try to clean the very worst...and this is another tape that was never going to sound great...
